From Italy to Portugal: Cities learning flood management measures
From Italy to Portugal: Cities learning flood management measures
10 März 2017 - 12:28
Representatives from the towns of Andrano (Italy) and Agueda (Portugal) visited the Italian town of Isola Vicentina on 11-12 January. The three cities share a Mediterranean climate and are recently facing similar challenges caused by climate change. These include water and flood management and extreme weather conditions (storms but also elevated temperatures in summer).

Isola Vicentina had the opportunity to present its water plan, which has been developed in collaboration with the IUAV University, and together with the Covenant of Mayors Action Plan, makes a comprehensive climate strategy for the city. The water plan follows three main elements: prevention, protection and preparation. A series of scenarios have been studied in order to understand how the land use of an area affects its capacity to absorb water and avoid water runoff and flooding and how urban areas along with rural/wood areas are impacted by extreme weather events. Moreover, the city is now developing a WebGis Application, enabling citizens to learn about the environmental and economic added value of the measures presented in the plan.

As a final result of the visit, the representatives of the three cities have signed “The territories’ Charter for good water management”, ensuring their commitment to continue the trilateral cooperation on the topics of mitigation and adaptation.

The city of Agueda and Andrano will now look into possibilities to transfer some of the measures learnt during this visit, in their own specific localised contexts.
